Monero is a separate cryptocurrency built around privacy by default: ring signatures hide which output is being spent, stealth addresses hide the recipient, and RingCT hides amounts. It is not Bitcoin and does not share Bitcoin's chain; it is here because Bitcoin users often hold or swap some.
A remote node lets a Monero wallet scan the chain without downloading it. Because the wallet decrypts outputs locally, the node cannot see your balance, but it does see your IP address and which blocks you ask for, so choose a node you trust or use Tor (we publish an onion address).
What people use it for
- Running the official Monero GUI or CLI wallet, Cake Wallet or Feather without a local blockchain.
- Atomic swaps between Bitcoin and Monero, which need a reliable node on each side.
- Mobile wallets that need a restricted-RPC node with TLS.
How we run it
Restricted RPC (no wallet functions) for any Monero wallet. Also as a v3 onion for Feather, Cake and Monerujo.
Trust, stated plainly
Plain HTTP on 18089 by design of the protocol; the remote node sees your IP and the outputs you fetch.
