A Lightning channel is safe only while your node is online to catch a counterparty publishing an old channel state. A watchtower watches on your behalf: your node hands it encrypted penalty transactions that it can only decrypt if the matching old state ever appears on chain, at which point it broadcasts them and the cheater loses their funds.
An altruistic tower does this for free and learns nothing about your channels unless a breach happens. This is one, run on lnd, so lnd users have a public tower to register with that is not also their channel peer.
What people use it for
- Protecting an lnd node that is not online 24 hours a day (a laptop or a home node behind a flaky connection).
- A second tower alongside one you run yourself, so one outage does not leave you unwatched.
- Learning how breach protection works by registering and watching the session in lnd's logs.

How we run it
A second lnd in watchtower-only mode with no funds. It watches for old channel states and broadcasts the justice transaction you handed it in advance; sweeps pay to your address.
Trust, stated plainly
Altruistic: no fee. We see your encrypted state blobs and nothing else until a breach.
