VSS · versioned storage
An encrypted, versioned store for the small state a wallet must get back with its keys. Lightning channel state, and now labels, notes and files.
https://vss.mineracks.com/vssWhat it is
A Lightning node's channel state is the one thing it cannot afford to lose. Lose it and you cannot prove which channel state is current, which can cost you the channel's funds. A phone is a poor place to keep it, so LDK built the Versioned Storage Service: a small key-value store with a version on every object, where the client encrypts before upload and proves who it is by signing the request. The operator holds ciphertext and a public key that means nothing on its own.
This is that server, unmodified, run in Brisbane. It exists because the teams building non-custodial Lightning wallets asked publicly for hosts they did not have to run themselves, and a storage service is only useful if more than one person offers it.
The same shape turns out to suit anything small a wallet must recover alongside its keys. Our own research wallet keeps its BIP-329 labels, long notes and attached files here, encrypted under a key derived from the wallet's own recovery material, so two of its three keys bring back the labels as well as the money. That scheme is written up as a profile any wallet can implement.
What people use it for
- ldk-node wallets backing up channel state: point build_with_vss_store at the endpoint and go, no account and no sign-up.
- Any wallet that needs a small encrypted store it can recover from its seed or its keys, with versions to settle conflicts between devices.
- Wallet labels, notes and receipts, following the profile below.
